Yerba mate is hardy in USDA Zones 9 to 11 (indoors everywhere colder through winter). Outdoors in warm areas yerba mate can grow 20 feet tall but in pots it can be kept a manageable size. More caffeine in the leaves than in coffee. Collect the leaves and dry them to make tea. The quality of the soil determines the bitterness of the tea. The more nitrogen rich the soil is, the milder the taste. It blooms white in October to December. It has red- purple fruit when mature. This is an antioxidant herb.
